About Butt Implants
Butt implants, also known as butt augmentation or gluteal augmentation, is a procedure designed to improve the size, shape, and contours of buttocks. Typically, this is done through the use of implants, fat grafting, or a mixture of both.
The implants themselves are usually filled with silicone and surgically placed deep within your buttock tissue. Fat grafting involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body into your buttock tissue, often referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift. Keep in mind that butt lifts differ from butt augmentation; lifts are meant to remove excess skin and elevate the position of the buttocks, while butt implants are designed to improve size and shape.
From 2014 to 2015, for example, several procedures saw a lot of growth:
- Butt augmentations with fat grafting went up 28%, at about 15,000 procedures.
- Butt lifts went up 36%, to about 4,800 procedures.
- Butt implants went up 36% to about 2,500 procedures.
In 2015 alone, there was some sort of butt procedure every 30 minutes of every single day that year.

- You have realistic expectations
- You’re unhappy with the size or shape of your butt
- Your butt is asymmetrical
- Your butt is sagging
- You think your butt is too small
- You don’t smoke
- You have significant loose soft tissue in your gluteal area
Your surgeon will sit down with you to discuss your specific needs and desires, and set up a treatment plan that makes sense for your body.
What to Expect with Butt Implants
It is important that you refrain from smoking approximately 2 weeks before the procedure, as well as refrain from taking aspirin. You must also follow the diet sheet provided during your consultation. This limits the possibility of potential complications and allows you to have an easier recovery period.
Techniques and methods vary depending on your current body shape and desired outcome. Silicone butt implant sizes also vary. However, during your consultation, the appropriate size and shape of silicone implants will be determined.
Butt implants are an outpatient surgery which can last anywhere from 2-4 hours.
You will be put under anesthesia for your butt augmentation surgery. Generally, this procedure requires either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation, and your surgeon will choose which is best for you.
Incisions can be made at the top, bottom, or between the cheeks. However, all incisions are strategically placed in areas that can hide surgical scars. That’s why incisions between or below the cheeks are appealing because it significantly minimizes the appearance of unsightly scars.
Once the incisions are made, the butt implants are placed in or above the gluteal muscle on each side. The method of placement depends upon the type of implant, your body, and the amount of enlargement desired. Then, your surgeon will close up the incision with layered sutures within your buttock tissue, as well as sutures, skin adhesive, or surgical tape close to your skin.
Recovery Time and Follow-Up
The average recovery time for butt implants is about 6 weeks. Following the procedure, you will experience soreness and mild swelling, but these symptoms should subside within a few weeks. Vigorous activities should also be avoided during this time to prevent discomfort or injury.
Results are immediately visible, and as you recover, you’ll notice fading of incision lines and reduced swelling.
You’ll generally have a post-op follow-up with your surgeon 3 months after your surgery is completed to make sure everything is healing properly.
